What HR Actually Looks for in a Candidate (And a Few Things That Make Us Raise an Eyebrow)
By Andrea – Human Resources, Aces Fuel Injection
Let’s talk about job interviews for a minute.
As someone who works in Human Resources, I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of candidates over the years. Some interviews go incredibly well. Others…well, let’s just say they become memorable moments you don’t forget.
If you’ve ever wondered what HR is really looking for during an interview, the answer might surprise you.
First, we’re not looking for perfection. We’re looking for people.
At Aces, we move fast. Problems come up, priorities shift, and everyone has to work together to keep things moving forward. When I’m interviewing someone, I’m not just thinking about whether they can technically perform the job. I’m also thinking about whether they will work well with the team, take ownership of their work, and maintain a positive attitude when things inevitably get busy.
Because the truth is, skills can be taught. Attitude cannot.
One of the biggest things we notice in an interview is preparation. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should be clear that you took the time to learn a little about the company before sitting down for the conversation. Showing up prepared signals that you care about the opportunity and that you take your work seriously.
And then there are the little things that stand out, sometimes more than candidates realize. Checking your watch every few minutes during the interview tends to send the message that you may have somewhere better to be. Even if that’s not the case, it can make the conversation feel rushed or distracted.
Another common moment happens when we ask a question like, “Can you tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem at work?” and the response we receive is something along the lines of, “I always work hard and I’m a team player.”
That’s great to hear, and being a team player absolutely matters. But what we’re really hoping for is a specific example. Real situations help us understand how you think, how you approach challenges, and how you handle pressure. General answers can sometimes leave us guessing when we’d rather be learning about your experience.
But here’s a little secret that many candidates don’t realize: we’re actually rooting for you. When someone walks into an interview, we genuinely hope they are the person we’ve been looking for. Nobody enjoys interviewing dozens of candidates if the first one turns out to be a great fit. We want you to succeed because that means we’ve found someone who can join the team and contribute to what we’re building.
At Aces, we often talk about being “for the people.”
Most people assume that phrase refers only to our customers, and of course they are a huge part of what we do. But it also means the people who work here every day.
We want our employees to feel fulfilled in their work. We want them to develop new skills, take on new challenges, and continue advancing professionally. Whenever possible, we believe strongly in promoting from within and creating opportunities for our team members to step into new roles and leadership positions as the company continues to expand.
Some of the people in leadership roles today started in entry-level positions and worked their way up. Watching that kind of progress happen is honestly one of the most rewarding parts of working in Human Resources.
When we interview candidates, we’re not just thinking about the role we need to fill today. We’re also thinking about who might grow with the company tomorrow.
Sometimes the things that impress HR the most are actually very simple. Someone who shows up prepared. Someone who is curious and asks thoughtful questions. Someone who is honest about what they know — and just as honest about what they are still learning.
Those moments tell us far more than perfectly rehearsed answers ever could.
At the end of the day, we are building a team. The strongest teams are made up of people who communicate well, respect each other, and are willing to step up when something needs to get done.
So if you are preparing for an interview, here is the best advice I can offer.
Be prepared.
Be honest.
Be yourself.
And maybe try not to look at your watch like you’re waiting for the escape hatch to open.
Trust me, HR notices.A Quick Word to Future Aces Team Members
If you’re thinking about applying for a role at Aces, here’s the most honest advice I can give you.
Come prepared. Be yourself. Don’t worry about having every answer perfectly polished. We don’t expect perfection. We’re looking for people who care about their work, take pride in what they do, and want to be part of a team that is building something meaningful.
At Aces, we believe strongly in creating opportunities for our dedicated hard working teammates. Many of our team members started in one role and have moved into new positions or leadership roles. When we say we’re “for the people,” that includes the people who work here every day.
If you’re someone who wants to learn, contribute, and be part of a team that supports each other, you’ll fit in just fine.
Just try not to check your watch during the interview.
